Trump Administration Halts Funding for Landmark Diabetes Study

Updated: Apr 29

The Trump administration has cancelled funding for a 30-year nationwide study on pre-diabetes and diabetes, researchers said. The National Institutes of Health (NIH)  halted the grant for the Diabetes Prevention Program last week, though officials have not confirmed the reason. The decision appears linked to the administration’s move to cut federal grants to Columbia University over alleged failures to address antisemitism on campus.

Since 2022, Columbia has managed funding for the most recent phase of the program, which focuses on tracking the development of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias among participants. However, over 90% of the current funding—more than $80 million over five years—is distributed to more than two dozen research sites across the U.S., according to José Luchsinger, a Columbia professor and one of the study’s principal investigators.
