What glucose levels are 'normal'?

5 August 2025

Date Published:

Here, we're considering a person who doesn't have diabetes or any other condition that would affect glucose levels, although as we'll explain there are many other factors that will affect 'normal' glucose levels.

The following glucose levels may be considered ‘normal.’

4.0-5.4 mmol/L

When fasting ie usually applies in the morning before eating

4.0 – 5.9 mmol/L

Before meals

Up to 7.8 mmol/L

Up to 2 hours after eating

Fluctuating glucose levels are a normal reaction by the body when rebalancing energy requirements. It’s quite normal to see rises and falls in glucose levels and the body uses the hormone insulin to balance levels, this will be particularly evident after eating and exercising.

For those with diabetes, the body may not be able do this without intervention i.e. using insulin.

For non-diabetics, the body will normally stabilise levels quite quickly and this is the insight that that gets CGM users excited. Seeing the relationship of glucose levels with food, sleep and stress for instance can be eye-opening.

Monitoring glucose levels can even seem addictive as we ‘gamify’ the use of CGMs in pursuit of lessening the number or extent of spikes or crashes shown on our graph, Ultimately, like those with diabetes, we are all seeking ‘better health’.

If you struggle to keep a balance with these it may be that you need to seek medical advice from a healthcare professional.
